dramatic irony


dramatic irony

A situation in which the audience knows something about present or future circumstances that the character does not know

Example:

Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Macbeth plans the murder of Duncan whilst feigning loyalty. Duncan does not know of Macbeth’s plans but the audience does.

  1. An easy example for Irony is found in Romeo and Juliet. At the end, Romeo kills himself when he see's Juliet dead, he does this to be closer to her. It is an ironic situation, because Juliet is not dead, but simply unconscious, so therefor, his acts are taking him further away from her.
