theme

Theme
ideal or message about life, society, or human nature in a book.

Example:
Human Beings All Have the Same Needs:
From Montagues to Capulets in Romeo and Juliet or the characters in S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, book after book asserts that rich or poor, educated or dumb, all human beings need love and other basic needs met.

  1. Once you understand the theme of the book, it is so much easier to understand the book itself. The difference between a thesis and a theme is simple. A theme is used in fiction literature and a thesis in nonfiction works (science or history books) - EED.
